Ushering in a new era of technological innovation, Volur is a 10-driver hybrid universal in-ear monitor (UIEM), building on the heritage of our first high-driver count hybrid, Nio. The successful recipe of this hybrid platform propelled our appetite for discovery, resulting in one of the most challenging and rewarding developments in our history of pioneering industry-shaping high-end audio. Joining the ranks of our other technological powerhouses, like U18s and Fourté, this small package is filled with an almost impossible amount of proven and novel acoustic science.

Volür is a rare high-end audio product that bridges the gap between indulgent bass-loving and technical detail-oriented audiophiles. The pulsating heart of Volür is made up of two new custom 9mm dynamic drivers in a True Isobaric configuration, delivering unprecedented sonic capabilities in the low-frequency (LF) band. While our direct radiating tia high-driver remains the criterion in high-frequency (HF) performance, our new tia waveguide optimizes its efficiency while offering greater tuning control. The six low-mid and single high-mid balanced armature drivers carry through to Volür. Their implementation was wholly re-engineered to maximize internal space while integrating 3D printed acoustic tuning features. 

Our outer shell remains the same size, while all significant structural changes occur internally. The faceplate now features a sleeker chamfer, seamlessly blending with the matte black-finished aluminum shell. The final cosmetic touch comes in the form of an homage to the original Nio: a dreamy purple abalone chip made from responsibly harvested New Zealand Paua shell.

A new benchmark in acoustic delivery, Volür is capable of visceral, detailed, textured bass while leaving room for the rest of the spectrum to shine. The saturated mids continue to evoke a similar analog warmth of our best dynamic driver IEMs, while the highs propel it into the territory of some of the most resolving audio products in the world.

True Isobaric Configuration

Our cone-to-magnet isobaric driver configuration consists of two dynamic drivers connected by an acoustically inert coupling chamber. One diaphragm is fully sealed off, while only the other contributes sound pressure. This complex application results in better damping, lower distortion, twice the power handling (because there are two coils and two motor structures), and extended low frequency response.

 

 

Because this iso-group needed to be wired in series, we worked with our suppliers to create a new 9mm dynamic driver with an upgraded n54 magnet and 25μm PU/115°C + 19μm Ti Cone to increase sensitivity. To further shape the sound, we used a high-precision textile mesh acoustic low-pass filter, originally developed for the limited-edition Fourté Blanc.

 

 

 

Tia Waveguide

The direct-radiating tia high-driver is fitted with our new tia waveguide to increase the efficiency and general amplitude of the high frequency band. In order to refine its response, special diffusion windows were integrated to the front and side of the waveguide.

 

 

The tia waveguide also serves as a mounting mechanism, mating to the mid-driver housing, offering exact driver positioning during manufacturing.

 

Tubeless In-Ear Audio

64 Audio's tia is a patented IEM design methodology that aims to reduce unwanted resonance and distortion for a transparent and lifelike sound signature. Volür features two major elements of the tia system:

 

 

The tia driver is an open balanced armature speaker design that brings new meaning to resolution and transparency. It delivers crisp and detailed upper frequencies with characteristics not often found in a headphone or in-ear monitor. By opening a balanced armature, the diaphragm becomes fully unobstructed, unleashing the sound potential of the driver. This eliminates a lot of the vibrations and resonances that are inherent in conventional, closed balanced armature designs. With this new method of producing and delivering sound to the ear, conventional sound tubes and dampers are no longer necessary.

 

 

 

The tia single-bore design is a huge leap forward in eliminating unwanted tube resonance. The large bore itself serves as a sound-shaping chamber and aids the tia high driver in delivering a linear and coherent frequency response. Because of the extremely short sound path of the tia high driver, a remarkable high-frequency extension and smoothness is achieved. The large single bore also helps prevent clogging of the tip and obstruction of sound.

 

Air Pressure Exchange

Apex is a patented vent that releases air pressure in a sealed ear canal all while retaining a level of isolation; this venting alleviates listener fatigue and allows for a much more realistic soundstage. 

 

When you seal a miniature speaker in an ear canal, the air inside becomes trapped. As the speaker produces sound, it moves the air and causes the eardrum to work excessively. The pneumatic pressure exerted on the eardrum causes ear fatigue. Apex relieves this pressure, allowing the eardrum to move naturally, so you can comfortably listen longer.

 

Apex enables air to move freely in the ear canal, which extends the perceived soundstage and allows for a more natural listening experience. Everything from inserting, wearing, and removing the IEMs becomes a much more natural and painless process.

 

 

Apex is implemented in Volür via interchangeable modules, so you can quickly switch between different levels of isolation and sound signatures. Although the modules technically only affect the low frequencies, this psychoacoustically affects your perception of the whole frequency range. For a limited time to celebrate its launch, Volür includes four pairs of apex modules, including the new m12. 

 

• The m20 module (-20dB noise isolation) is the ideal module for maximizing both sub-bass and isolation.
• The m15 module (-15dB noise isolation) is fitted by default, allowing you to enjoy a natural warm sound, while hearing some of your surroundings.
• The m12 module (-12dB noise isolation) is included for a limited-time to celebrate the launch of Volür, bridging the gap between m15 and mX.
• The mX module (-10dB noise isolation) transforms Volür into a more neutral IEM, significantly attenuating bass, opening up the soundstage, and providing impressive versatility.

 

Linear Impedance Design

Smartphones, body packs, amps, and DAPs produce audio with different output impedances. The interaction of the earphone impedance curve with the sources may result in the same IEM sounding different with different sources.

 

LID is a proprietary circuit that corrects the non-linear impedances of the multiple drivers in this ten-driver IEM, restoring proper interaction with the source and preserving the desired sound signature, so you can enjoy the same sound reliably across sources.
